Protection of Personal Information for At-Risk Government Employees (Effective 5/7/2025)
Utah law 63G-2-303 allows certain government employees, such as law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors, and others facing safety risks, to request that their personal information be kept private in government records. This includes details like home address, phone numbers, email, and other sensitive data, as well as information about qualifying family members living with them.
To receive this protection, eligible employees must submit a formal request identifying the records they want classified as private. Government agencies will then restrict public access to that information, though some disclosures may still occur with consent, by court order, or under specific legal circumstances.
Local offices, such as county recorders and assessors, may fulfill this requirement by limiting access to sensitive details in public records. Employees should be aware that opting for privacy may prevent them from receiving certain public notices related to property or zoning.
Requests remain in effect for up to four years and can be renewed or canceled at any time.
Please see the attached form below for more information and eligibility information.
Redacting Personal Information from Recorded Documents (Effective 11/6/2025)
Utah law allows individuals to request that personal information be redacted from previously recorded documents. To do so, a written request must be submitted to the county recorder, including the applicable fee and specific document details.
The county recorder will create a redacted copy of the original document, removing the requested personal information while keeping the original record unchanged. The redacted version will be made available for public access, and will clearly note when the redaction occurred.
Access to the unredacted (original) document is restricted and only available to authorized individuals, such as the person named in the record, certain legal or title professionals, or by court order or subpoena.
Please see the forms below for both requests.
